Why the Cradle?

I'm just going to start by saying — I hate naming things. With a passion. When it would come time to decide upon a final title for our books at the publishing house, it had the potential to become the most lengthy, painful procedure that stretches a meeting into a monstrosity. And even when writing my own stories, I have a really hard time coming up with a title. So part of the actual delay on the blog was coming up with a good title that wasn't already taken.

Hah. Hah. Hah.

Something that has struck me many times in the Catholic world, both in the people I know and in the people of the Internet, is one simple fact:

A lot of really faithful Catholics are either converts (like my husband), or cradle Catholics who had a phase where they didn't care as much about their faith.

Cradle Catholics who are strongly faithful and have never had a period of lukewarm faith aren't often found. (Not saying they don't exist, just that a lot of cradle Catholics end up lukewarm for at least a period or leave the Church entirely. Also, I'm not equating questioning with being lukewarm. I had a period where I questioned the Church, but I was strongly inclined towards Catholicism the entire time and never truly considered a life apart from the Church.)

It wasn't the case for me, and Shane and I want to do our best to help our children also beat the odds. So we're starting "from the cradle" to try to raise Catholics who know what the Church teaches, understands it to the best of their abilities, and love Christ and His Church on earth.

Also, it seemed a particularly apt name when considering that this blog is literally starting "in the cradle" of our parenthood. Kathryn, our first child, made her appearance on October 17, 2015, so starting this during my pregnancy with her seemed apt.

And it meant that I got to design a baby/cradle logo. If you were curious (and I'm sure you were close to becoming the theoretical cat in the well-known saying), stylized cartoon-esque babies are HARD to design. But it was fun.

So we start in the Cradle. Now where will we go?
